461 Arrested For Online Gambling-Related Charges In Thailand In 2022
Thai authorities arrested a total of 461 people in 2022 for their alleged involvement in illegal online gambling websites, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Social Affairs reported, citing local media Bangkok Post.
Both land gambling and online gambling are illegal in Thailand.
Thai authorities blocked 6,024 illegal websites URLs in 2022, most of them accused of promoting anti-subject sentiment or hosting illegal online gambling websites, according to media reports. A total of 1,830 illegal gambling sites were also reportedly blocked last year.
Thailand has been stepping up efforts to crack down on illegal online gambling. Several high-profile activities have been carried out in recent months. In November, Thailand and China agreed to step up cooperation, especially in relation to efforts to combat transnational crimes, including online gambling.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Thailand's parliament was expected to begin discussing a report in Thailand proposing liberalisation of its land casinos and online gambling businesses.
The legalization of gambling has been the subject of controversy in Buddhism in recent years. Several Southeast Asian countries adjacent to Thailand, including Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia, have legal gambling places.
